Did you have a room of your own when you were young? Most of us had to share rooms with our siblings, but we all had a dream of what our ideal room would look like. Today’s kids and teens have their own rooms most of the time, and when it comes to decorating, they often have a mind of their own!

The young decor style isn’t really an ‘official’ decor style – it’s just a term used to refer to rooms occupied by young people. For the purpose of today’s post, we’ll keep the age limit for this category from 12-20 years, including all ages from pre-teens to young adults.

Since this is an age of rapid transformation, the young decor style has to be something fluid, which can change and adapt with the young person as he or she grows and their interests change. People of this age also have pretty strong opinions and would want their space to be according to their wishes, but it still helps to have some grounding characteristics to build upon.

8 Ways to bring the Young Decor Style to your Space

1. Choose a Theme

Choosing a theme helps streamline the entire decorating process and is a great way to narrow down the colors and patterns to use. For instance, you can choose the nautical theme, and build upon white, blue and red. There is no limit to what theme to choose – it is entirely the individual’s choice. Once the theme is chose, get colors that are cheerful and infuse energy into the space.

2. Ensure enough Storage

If you’re a parent, you know one thing – kids have a lot of stuff! With so many activities including school, sports and extra curriculars, kids need adequate storage to compartmentalize all their things. Ensure enough storage by making use of wasted space. In addition to drawers and cupboards, make use of space under the bed, over the cupboard and behind the door.

3. Choose Multipurpose Furniture

As kids get through adolescence, they transform into new people, and you need their decor to reflect this. Choose multipurpose furniture that serves multiple function and grows with the child. This is especially important if you’re short on space. Bunk beds, sliding doors, vertical storage and sofa beds are great ways to optimize space without compromising on function.

4. Free up Floor Space

Kids do a lot of stuff on the floor, whether its making posters, building models or having a pizza party with their friends. That’s why it’s important to ensure that there is ample floor space. Try to use furniture that can be stacked against the wall, like sofa beds. Place a soft rug on the floor to make for comfortable seating and to prevent it from being too cold.

5. Consider Space for Creativity

This is an age of boundless imagination and creativity, and it’s important to ensure that their space offers enough opportunity for this. Install storage that makes it convenient to get to their supplies, whether it’s for art, photography or sewing. While at it, look for ways to help display their finished projects, like a mini art gallery or open shelves.

6. Ensure Lots of Seating

While the pandemic may have put a pause on friends getting together, we are still hopeful of being able to do it after everything is done!  Make sure the space has lots of seating to accommodate all the young people and their things. Young decor has a casual vibe, which means bean bags and foldable chairs work well.

7. Put up a Message Board

Kids of this age have lots of activities and they’ll need to have constant reminders of the things they need to do and people to call. A message board is a great option for this, and there are many options to choose from. You can opt for a wire grid, a cork board, a magnetic board or a plain black board or white board. For instagrammable quotes, a cinematic light box or felt board with letters are good ideas.

8. Include Options for Personalization

At this age, young people are figuring out their identities and their place in the world, and their decor should reflect this. Give them plenty of opportunities to display their personality, whether it’s through wall art, DIY projects, collections or souvenirs. Some like to keep things a little toned down, while others may prefer something more dramatic, like a personalized neon light.

In a nutshell, there is no right or wrong way to do young decor – it is a very individual choice! However, since having no boundaries or rules can be overwhelming, these tips can help narrow down your options and create a space that’s very functional, and proves to be a space where many happy memories are made!
