Glam decor is also referred to as Hollywood Glam, since the roots of this style lie in the Hollywood movie style of the 1930s. This style is gorgeous and opulent, and it doesn’t hold back on luxurious fabrics or glittery metals. A lot of it is reminiscent of the clothes Hollywood divas wore then, with their fur boas, velvet gowns, sparkly jewels and overall glamour.

The glam style got popular during the ’30s and has grown more popular with the ages. It is a really easy style to incorporate into any space, including bathrooms and kitchens. As the style has developed over the years, there are now a few identifying features of the glam style, which you’re sure to be familiar with from various social media channels.

6 Ways to get the Glam Style in your Space

1. Include Metallic Colors

The best part about the glam style is that you can start with a neutral base and build on from there. Popular colors are black, white and grey, and metallic tones feature prominently. You can also use jewel tones like navy, purple or bottle green, but in minimal amounts. Some glam homes also feature one or two accent items in a bright color like magenta.

2. Choose Patterns Carefully

Patterns play an important role in glam decor, but they shouldn’t dominate. The best patterns are chevron, geometrical shapes, damask, quatrefoil and animal print like leopard and zebra. You can use these prints any way you like. If you want to be mild with them, include them in throws and cushions. If you want to go bold, try them in drapes, rugs or wallpaper.

3. Opt for Smooth Textures

Another word for glam is luxe, and all the materials used should feel smooth and luxurious to the touch. For fabrics, that refers to velvet, silk, faux fur, suede or satin. These apply to all furnishings like rugs, upholstery, curtains and cushion covers. For surfaces and accents, go for smooth materials like marble, metal, acrylic, glass and crystal. This is not the place for raw, unfinished textures like burlap!

4. Bring in the Bling

Ah, the one thing that spells true glam – bling! Glam rooms feature lots of metallic accents in gold, silver or rose gold. These appear in frames, table or chair legs, lighting, wall art and decorative accents. You can stick to any one color of metallic bling, or if you’re ready for it, mix it up!

5. Use Mirrors in Different Ways

Since glam is all about shiny things, mirrors feature a lot, and not just inside a frame on the wall. Mirrored furniture are quite popular in this style, as are lacquered surfaces polished till they reflect light. A large mirror in a gold frame is the prefect statement making glam element that also makes the room appear larger.

6. Go Big with Lighting

Lighting fixtures in the glam style aren’t just about helping you see your way in the dark – they’re integral parts of the decor scheme. This style is not where you hold back – you can go all out with the grandest chandelier you can find! Grand, dramatic light fixtures are common, especially with crystal or sparkly accents. Good lighting also enhances the beauty of the reflective surfaces in the room and makes glittery accents more shiny.

While glam gives you permission to let loose in the shiny and sparkly category, it is important to remember that this style is still sophisticated and classy. To avoid overkill, be smart about your selection of pieces. Don’t go for a mirrored wardrobe, dresser and night stands all in one room – one of them will do. Use a mix of textures and materials so the style looks more organic and less OTT.

If you love fancy things but feel like they’ll look too flashy in your space, it helps to start with a clean, neutral slate and then start adding elements. Even one show stopper piece will have a great impact, like a large golden mirror. You’ll find that the glam style borrows a lot from the Art Deco style, but takes it a little further. So if you enjoy luxurious things and would love to go back to a time when people gathered together for drinks instead of staring at their phones, this style may help you achieve that life!
