The Hamptons style is exactly what you would expect from a holiday by the beach – it’s relaxed, inviting, beautiful, simple and perfect for bonding with family and friends. The name of the style is derived from a place in Long Island, USA. The Hamptons used to be a fishing settlement for many years, and was rather isolated from the city. However, when the place got connected by rail, it turned into a vacation hotspot for the rich and the famous, and it led to the development of its own unique decor style.

Though the Hamptons style today is classic and sophisticated, it still retains the hardiness of the early houses of the fishing village. Locally sourced natural materials are used, and the overall vibe is a light, open space with lots of light and space for entertaining.

The Hamptons style is exactly what you would expect from a holiday home by the sea, but you can bring this to your home wherever you live. Let’s start by understanding what the characteristic features of the Hamptons style include.

6 Ways to get the Hamptons Style in your Space

1. Let White Dominate

The Hamptons style color palette is pretty straightforward – white is the dominant color, while you can also use shades of blue and even bits of green and yellow. Black, reds, pinks and oranges are generally not found in the Hamptons color scheme. Even kitchen countertops are made of light materials like marble. The walls are also fuss-free and in shades of white.

2. Go for Natural Textures

The old houses of the Hamptons were made of hardy materials so they could withstand the elements, and this spirit is seen in today’s homes as well. Include lots of natural textures like wood, jute, wicker, burlap and linen. Wooden furniture is either polished or painted white.

 3. Create Lots of Light

Natural light is a main feature of the Hamptons style and what gives it its classic open and airy feel. Make use of whatever natural light source you have, by removing anything blocking the windows and using sheer curtains. If you don’t have as much natural light as you’d like, create an illusion of the same by layering lights. You can do this with pendant lamps, wall sconces and wall lights.

4. Opt for Plush Seating

Window seats are a great addition to the Hamptons home, as it gives out that relaxing aesthetic making you want to settle down with a book. All the seating in a home of this style features plush seating, so you sink into the cushions when you sit. Ensure lots of throw pillows for a hygge effect along with stuffed ottomans or pouffes.

5. Keep the Floor Simple

Like the walls, the floors of the Hamptons style home is kept simple and fuss-free. Wood floorings are often just polished and left exposed to reveal their natural beauty. You can also use rugs in natural materials like cotton, wool or jute, keeping the patterns simple. Stick to the color scheme of white, beige or shades of blue.

6. Include Coastal Accents

Nothing screams beach house like some coastal decor accents! Table accessories in the shape of coral, sea shells or starfish are great picks. You can also try those ‘sand jars’ with layers of different colored sands. Create little vignettes of different items for a curated look. Blue and white pottery also work well in a Hamptons theme.

If you live in a home where an all or mostly white interior is out of the question, you may want to rethink using a Hamptons style. However, you can bring in elements of the style like accessories and sticking to neutral colors. I think this is a style that would work wonderfully in a guest room. Nothing like reminders of the sun and the sea to help your guest feel relaxed and happy!
