You create a luxury resort-like ambience right at home! And if you want inspiration, simply watch The White Lotus, an anthology by HBO Max!
The White Lotus is the name of a fictional luxury hotel chain, and the story follows the adventures of guests and staff at the hotel. Each season features a hotel at a different location – so far we have Hawaii, Sicily and Koh Samui, Thailand.
The decor of the hotel in each country has been painstakingly created, keeping the country’s culture in mind, and the result is here for everyone to see. The makers did such an excellent job that the show won 16 Primetime Emmy Awards and 2 Golden Globes – yes, it’s that good!
Decor Ideas Inspired by White Lotus
Production designers Cristina Onori and Laura Fox have gone all out on creating the ultimate luxury ambience in The White Lotus, and as you watch the show, you can’t help but envy the people living there! Cultural accents combine with opulence and natural beauty to create a one-of-a-kind experience!
Luxurious upholstery
In any luxury hotel, simply sitting down feels expensive, like you’ve just plopped yourself on the softest, fluffiest sofa ever! All high-end hotels use luxurious materials like velvet for their upholstery, which not only feels great, it also looks amazing! This is an easy way to bring home the luxury experience – simply get yourself a velvet accent chair!
Ornate furniture
Many luxury hotels around the world were actually palaces or homes of noblemen in the past, and they still maintain the structure so that guests can get the royal experience. The White Lotus in Sicily seems to have done the same thing, considering all the amazing, ornate furniture they have – clearly a mark of quality materials and Italian craftsmanship!
Wicker pieces
Wicker and rattan are somehow associated with a relaxed, laidback vibe, which is why they are popular choices in holiday homes and hotels and also for beach bags! The White Lotus has quite a lot of wicker furniture and wicker lamps around the property, and it looks great! Apparently, the sale of rattan chairs skyrocketed after the show came out! It is a budget-friendly way to create the same relaxed, chic aesthetic in your home.
Decorated walls
The walls of the common areas and rooms of The White Lotus are works of art themselves and deserve to be admired appropriately. The patterns on the wallpaper are actually connected to the story, and also give us hints about what’s going to happen. The walls of each location are different, with tropical wallpaper for Hawaii, detailed frescoes for Italy and murals for Thailand.
Exotic artwork
The White Lotus is absolutely brimming with all kinds of art, from traditional oil paintings to modern botanical art. Gallery walls abound, with multiple frames of art arranged together in different ways. Add interest to your gallery wall by mixing up the sizes of the frames, and change the look frequently by rearranging the frames on the wall.
Intricate chandeliers
A hotel can’t be called luxury if it doesn’t have chandeliers, does it? Every White Lotus property has stunning chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, which are no less than works of art. Glass, crystal, metal – all kinds of materials are used in making these, and you may be able to snag a lucky find at a flea market or antique store!
Traditional sculptures
As mentioned earlier, The White Lotus celebrates the culture of the place it’s in, and this can be seen in the many sculptures and decor pieces that adorn the common areas. This is especially true of the Sicily season, which features lots of European-inspired decor, like the Moor’s head sculpture shown above.
Large decor pieces
Have you noticed that high-end stores and hotels always have gigantic decor pieces? Whether it’s a vase or a lamp, they are huge, as if it is telling us that it means business! You won’t find anything dainty or tiny in these places – everything has to be large and grand and oversized. Finding such pieces in regular stores can be expensive, so check out a thrift store for good finds.
Tropical accents
The Hawaii season had lots of tropical elements like pineapples, palm trees, large leaves, hibiscus flowers and more, creating a vibrant, colourful mood. It also helps that the hotel was surrounded by lots of greenery! It’s very easy to find furnishings, art and decor pieces in this theme, so you can easily convert a boring space into a tropical paradise! Don’t forget to add a wicker chair so you have a corner to sit down and relax!
Shades of blue
One of the most relaxing colours is blue, and if you want to create a calm oasis for your guests, blue is the way to go! This is probably why The White Lotus uses blue in so many different shades in multiple ways. Blue appears on pool chairs, rugs, cushions, bedding and of course art. Blue and white make for a luxurious color combination too, and is an excellent colour scheme for a bedroom.
Monkey-themed decor
You can find lots of monkeys in The White Lotus – but not live ones! Monkeys appear in sculptures, art and on the wallpaper. If you aren’t a fan of monkeys, pick an animal you like and then decorate with it! It’s important not to go overboard here; for instance, if a wallpaper full of your favorite animal will drive you nuts after a week, it’s not worth it!
Now you know how to turn your space into a luxury resort, it’s time to get to work! It’s easier than you think, and doesn’t really cost a lot. Wicker chairs, rattan accessories, wallpaper and tropical decor are all easy to find and light on the pocket, so there’s nothing stopping you from living like a billionaire!
