Create a cozy and atmosphere at home that’s ready to welcome your best buds – with these decor ideas inspired by Friends!
“Welcome to the real world. It sucks. You’re gonna love it.”
Even if you’re not much of a TV show fan and aren’t aware of all the latest ones, one thing you’re sure to have seen is Friends. We were watching it even before Netflix and all the streaming channels, and it was the biggest stressbuster for the average millennial!
Set in the mid to late nineties and early 2000s in New York, the show follows the journey of six friends over the course of a decade sees them through many life events, while celebrating their relationships. In the process, they spend a lot of time in Monica’s apartment, which becomes a central location for several crucial scenes.
With its purple paint and yellow peephole frame, this apartment was so iconic that even the LEGO company came out with a set based on it! The apartment seemed to be a naturally welcoming spot, and it matches the comforting nostalgia of the show itself. Let’s see how we can get inspired to create a similar feel in our own homes!
Decor Ideas Inspired by Friends
In the show, Monica inherits her apartment from her grandmother. Production designer John Shaffner based it on an old New York apartment he used to live in. Together with set decorator Greg Grande, he added a lot of cozy details for a warm, rustic aesthetic and added some fun, quirky elements to match the show’s vibe. Let’s take a deeper look into what these elements are.
Comfy seating
Several important scenes in the show take place in Monica’s living room, which seems to be set up to host multiple people while keeping them comfortable. The focal point is certainly the light-colored couch, along with armchairs and other seating options. Another couch the gang occupies is the orange one at Central Perk, and who can forget Joey and Chandler’s La-Z-Boy armchairs?
If you want to create an inviting and cozy feel in your own living room, invest in a large, chunky couch that you can literally sink into. Keep it in a neutral color so you can dress it up with colorful cushions and throws, which you can change according to your mood. Or you can go the Central Perk way and choose a brightly colored sofa as a conversation starter!
Bright colours
One of the most identifying features of Monica’s apartment is the bright purple on the walls and door. If you don’t do anything but paint your walls purple, you’re almost done with your Friends-style makeover! Since the apartment has an open-floor plan, they’ve used different colors to demarcate spaces, with purple in the living space, blue for the kitchen cabinets and pink for Monica’s bedroom.
All these colors are balanced by some exposed brick, which acts as a neutralizing factor. The curtains are in a contrasting yellow, which goes perfectly with the purple walls. The dining chairs keep changing their colors over the seasons, but they’re never boring!
Sturdy furniture
When your friends frequently end up at your place, eating, drinking and playing games, you need to ensure that you have the furniture that can withstand all that action! Monica’s apartment seems to have some solid wood basics, like her coffee table, dining table, TV unit and end tables. When they’re hardy and durable, they can handle years of wear and tear. But you must still use a coaster!
It’s always a good idea to splurge on basic furniture pieces like couches and dining tables, choosing materials like solid wood, which won’t break down easily. To truly get Monica’s grandmother-chic look, see if you can find a well-made, antique piece at a flea market or second-hand store.
Patterned rugs
Carpets and rugs are great for instantly warming up a space and making it feel more cozy and comfortable. However, when you frequently host your friends who may not be neat freaks, you need a carpet that can hide stains! This probably explains why Monica and Gunther both have patterned carpets in their home and cafe, respectively.
Another advantage of using patterned rugs in apartments is that it helps section off an open plan area into separate living or dining areas. You can also use the colors of the rug to create a color scheme for your cushions, curtains and other decor.
Floral prints
Monica loves florals, and this is very evident when you look around her apartment! Her carpets, bedding, curtains and even lampshades have floral prints on them. She also has floral art prints on her wall, which gives the space a feminine feel, without being too overbearing.
Another interesting fact about the curtains in this apartment is that they’re used along with blinds. So if you’re finding it hard to choose between curtains and blinds, Monica’s apartment shows us that you can use both at once!
Door decor
If you need a single picture to represent the Friends TV show, it would be of a purple door with a yellow frame over the peephole. That’s how iconic that yellow frame is! It was initially meant to be on a side table, but it fell and the glass broke. Not wanting to waste it, the set decorator hung it over the peephole and history was made!
But it’s not just Monica’s door that has something on it – Chandler and Joey’s apartment has a Magna Doodle sketchpad, on which they write little messages – both heartfelt and hilarious! This just goes on to show that there are no rules – you can reuse anything you like in any way you like!
Quirky pieces
In the show, Monica was someone who loved decorating her home, but couldn’t afford expensive decor pieces. Instead, she would look for things others threw away or scour secondhand markets. As a result, she ended up with an eclectic mix of unique items, some of which were even ridiculous!
The show features many such quirky elements, including Joey’s giant ceramic dog, a clock-shaped cookie jar that says ‘Cookie Time’, and of course, original Phoebe Buffay artworks – Gladys and Glynis! Such treasures aren’t available in stores, and that’s what makes them so special!
Toys on display
The Magna Doodle sketchpad isn’t the only toy on display; Joey and Chandler have turned their apartment into a fun zone with other items! The foosball table in the middle of their apartment is unmissable, and since it’s so obvious, it gets a good amount of use!
So if you have a toy you love, bring it out proudly and keep it somewhere central, so you can see it all the time, and even play with it when you want! There’s no need to be embarrassed about it – Joey certainly doesn’t feel that way about Hugsy!
Plants and flowers
Monica’s apartment shows us that no matter how small your home is, there’s always space for plants and flowers! Her love for floral prints isn’t random, as you’ll notice when you watch the show. Every empty spot is filled with flowers, and she even has herbs growing on top of her fridge.
Even if you don’t have space on your tables, you can use the walls, as Monica has done! We’re not sure if all the flowers shown are real, but you can always make do with some faux blooms.
Poster Art
This is a modern New York apartment that is brimming with personality from unique finds and quirky gifts, so the artwork on the walls has to match! Monica’s apartment has lots of framed posters, and she seems to have a special love for French ones.
If you’re trying to get the same aesthetic, look for vintage or retro posters, which are far more charming than newer ones. Try to get colors that reflect your overall decor scheme, or ties the different colours together.
The best thing about these decor ideas inspired by Friends is that you can use them in any situation – whether you own or rent, whatever the size of your home, even if it’s not completely finished! The vibe is very relaxed, cozy and quirky, which is great for you to express your personality through your home, while keeping it warm and comfortable. Soon, you’ll find that your gang wants to crash there all the time, and you’ll enjoy the company and the chaos!
