If you’ve seen Wes Anderson’s movies, you know how visually appealing they are, besides the whimsical storyline. The colors, layouts and unexpected elements are what make his movies instantly recognizable and so well-loved!

The Grand Budapest Hotel is Wes Anderson’s highest-grossing film, and it has won multiple awards, including the Oscar for Best Production Design. It’s no wonder, then, that this is a movie whose design is worth discussing!

Released in 2014, the story is set in a pre-World War II era, in a fictional European country named Zubrowka. The era plays an important role in the story, as well as in the decor of the sets!

Decor Ideas Inspired by Grand Budapest Hotel

The award-winning production designer of The Grand Budapest Hotel is Adam Stockhausen, who has worked with set decorator Anna Pinnock to create some of the most beautiful sets you’ve ever seen. Many of the scenes are set within the hotel, displaying color-drenched frames that are vibrant but still elegant.

Vibrant colors

Wes Anderson doesn’t shy away from using colors in his work, and he has gone all out in The Grand Budapest Hotel! Bright pinks, deep reds, dark purples and beautiful turquoise – all these make an appearance, and not in small amounts! These colors are used in a way that makes the overall aesthetic bright and pleasing, despite having a high contrast.

The reason each color makes such an impact is that it is used in such large doses. For instance, entire walls are painted bright pink, and the whole floor is a deep red. Pastels and bright shades co-exist, and gold accents add a touch of luxury while breaking up the seas of colour.

Curved archways

The Grand Budapest Hotel uses archways abundantly, which give a luxurious look while also softening the vibe. The fact that they’re so high adds to the opulent feel, especially when they’re accompanied by decorative pillars or lighting.

Now, adding an archway to your home may be a little difficult without breaking things, but you can create a faux arch without too much effort. You can extend this effect by using furniture with arched legs, or mirrors and frames that have an arched edge.

Symmetry

Throughout the movie, you’ll notice that every frame is so beautifully planned and executed, and many of them have an almost-perfect symmetry about them. This can either be in the architectural elements like staircases, or it can be created by placing furniture and lights in a symmetrical layout.

Symmetry is instantly visually pleasing and creates a feeling of comfort, which, obviously, is essential for a hotel! You can easily get this look by getting matching armchairs, vases, or picture frames and arranging them symmetrically. Symmetry also adds sophistication to a space without trying too hard.

Wall molding

Wall mouldings are a popular design element in many old European homes, and Wes Anderson has included them in the sets of The Grand Budapest Hotel as well. Mouldings are seen pretty much everywhere – walls, doors, balconies and even inside the railway car!

Thankfully, these days mouldings are very easy to install, with peel-and-stick versions being easily available. They’re cost-effective and don’t take too long, and you can use it on your walls and ceilings as well. Paint the mouldings in the same color as the wall for an elegant look.

Sculptural details

Wes Anderson is far from a minimalist, which you can see in the way he uses sculptural elements with intricate details and carvings! Look at that table with the antlers for legs, for instance!

You can either go this quirky route or get something a little more traditional or art deco-style. This can be in the form of antique furniture, vintage frames and decorative objects, or in some decorative moulding. Even a showstopping single piece can take your room design up a few notches!

Rounded lighting

The main lobby of the Grand Budapest Hotel has a gorgeous metal chandelier that is composed of globe-shaped bulbs. This kind of lighting puts the focus on the intricacies of the chandelier itself, while giving the entire area a warm, cozy glow.

You may have seen such globe lights on the borders of dressing table mirrors, and Wes Anderson shows us that they work pretty much everywhere! You can also get them as globe string lights, which you can install quickly without anyone’s help.

Exquisite glassware

There are many scenes in The Grand Budapest Hotel where the characters are chatting over a drink, and this gives us a chance to see some beautiful crystal and glassware. It’s only natural that a hotel as luxurious as The Grand Budapest Hotel would use the expensive stuff – Gustave wouldn’t settle for anything less!

Invest in a good collection of glassware, even if you don’t drink alcohol. They’re lovely for offering your guests refreshments, and will look lovely on your sculptural coffee table that you’ve got!

Interesting patterns

Wes Anderson isn’t just obsessed with colours, he also loves patterns – the busier the better! He has used patterns on multiple surfaces in the movie, including the floor, carpeting, wallpaper and drapes. They range from dainty florals to busy beehive patterns, encompassing a variety of styles!

Wallpaper is your friend when you want to get the Wes Anderson look, and with so many options to choose from, you can go nuts! Instead of abstract or loose patterns, choose something that’s busier, with a stripe or motif that is constantly repeating.

Childlike whimsy

If you had to describe Wes Anderson’s work in one word, whimsical would be a good choice! In the middle of all the bold colours, busy patterns and bright lights, there’s a certain childlike innocence in the movie, which is also reflected in Zero and Agatha’s relationship.

You can add this feel to your space by using a palette of candy colours, but don’t let them be too light, or you’ll lose that Wes Anderson-like vibrance. Wes Anderson’s style certainly isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay.
