The Devil Wears Prada tells us the story of Andy’s journey, but it is to Meryl Streep’s credit that everyone who watched the movie walked away with Miranda Priestly at the top of their mind!

No one can forget the awesome, and equally terrifying, editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, who is also undeniably stylish. It’s obvious then that her spaces would be just as elegant, whether it’s her office or her home.

Set in New York in 2006, this movie tells us about the importance of design in our everyday life. Everyone remembers the iconic scene where Miranda schools Andy, showing her how her choice of outfit is influenced by the many processes of the fashion world, from couture designers all the way to mall sales.

Well, that applies to interior design too, and that’s why the spaces in the movie are so well designed as well!

Decor Ideas Inspired by Devil Wears Prada

Jess Gonchor is the production designer for The Devil Wears Prada, and he has done an excellent job of making sure that Miranda’s spaces reflect her sophisticated, modern style. All the spaces she occupies feature high-end furniture and materials, yet are minimal with lots of natural light. The Runway offices look exactly like what you’d expect from a New York fashion magazine office, with gorgeous views of the city, while Miranda’s home is a Neo-Italian Renaissance-style townhouse. Here’s a breakdown of the design elements in both these spaces.

Monochrome palette

The concept of minimalism also applies to the colors used here, with most spaces having a simple monochromatic color scheme. The Runway office has a stark and commanding black and white color palette, while the townhouse has a warmer blue with beige.

The way the main colors are spread out is what makes the design so interesting. While the walls, floors and large furniture pieces are neutral, the pops of blue appear in the carpets, upholstery and lampshades. The black and white scheme is seen in the furniture, the picture frames, photographs and even the foliage!

Accent color

While the main color palette is a monochromatic one, there are little pops of color around the place. In the office, this comes in the form of brick red filing cabinets, chairs or desks. At Miranda’s home, this appears in artwork, which is often made up of bright colors.

Using an accent color besides the main colors provides a pleasant break from the monochromatic scheme and makes the entire room much more interesting. It’s easy to do in your own home too – simply add this pop in furnishings or wall decor, and try to repeat it a few times throughout the room to lock it in.

Clean lines

You’ll notice that a lot of Miranda’s surroundings match her own personal style. For instance, Miranda also wears monochrome outfits, and another point is that she dresses in clean lines, without any extra bells and whistles. This is reflected in her interiors too, whether it’s an arched doorway, a curved staircase, or a marble fireplace.

The furniture in Miranda’s home and especially office has straight, sleek and clean lines. None of the pieces have intricate details, like the ones you’d find in a Bridgerton home, for instance. It’s really easy to find furniture of this kind at places like IKEA or other big box stores.

Gallery walls

The gallery wall in Miranda Priestly’s office occurs in several movie scenes, so it’s one that’s quite familiar. Gallery walls can easily look cluttered, but Miranda’s office proves that when done intentionally, it can be quite elegant!

Both the frames and the pictures in them stick to the monochromatic color palette, which is crucial in maintaining that sophisticated look. You can make your gallery wall more interesting by adding other framed items, like mirrors or tapestries.

Stylish lighting

Miranda’s home oozes sophistication, which means you’re sure you won’t find those ghastly bright overhead lights in it! Instead, they’ve used lots of layered lighting in the form of chandeliers and table lamps, which give out a soft, warm light.

The entryway of Miranda’s home, through which Andy gingerly walks, has a gorgeous Murano chandelier. While all the lamps are beautiful and expensive, none of them is excessively ornate, and they stick to the overall theme of clean lines and minimal design.

Minimal modern art

Many people tend to think that a minimal aesthetic is inherently boring, but Miranda’s house proves that it’s not true! Yes, your furniture may be simple with clean lines and you may not have too many colors and patterns, but one way to add that extra zing to your interiors is through art.

If you know Miranda Priestly, you’d know that she isn’t the kind to hang oil paintings – she’d much rather have modern art! Large pieces of modern art are a subtle display of wealth without being vulgar, and it’s also a way to show your whimsical side!

It is believed that Miranda’s character is loosely based on Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue magazine. So much so that even Miranda’s office is inspired by a photo of Anna’s real-life office – down to the octagonal mirror on the wall! This movie reminds us that even the little decisions we make for our homes today are influenced by many factors, many of which we may not even be aware of. Wherever we live, we’re all interconnected!
