Bring back ’90s nostalgia with these decor ideas inspired by Home Alone, one of the most popular Christmas movies ever!
“This is my house. I have to defend it.”
If I had to name the movie I’ve rewatched the most, it would probably be Home Alone! As a child growing up in the ’90s, I thoroughly enjoyed the way Kevin managed to live on his own and how he chased away two grown-up thieves with such unconventional techniques.
I’m not the only one who loves this movie – Home Alone is considered one of the best Christmas movies ever, and it was nominated for two Oscars and two Golden Globes. And part of the charm is certainly that huge house that becomes an integral part of the story!
In the movie, Kevin lives in this house with his parents and four siblings, but the movie shows his extended family, too. The house looks like it has a heart so big that it could accommodate any number of people. If you have ever wanted to recreate that feeling in your own home, you’ll love these decor tips!
Decor Ideas Inspired by Home Alone
Home Alone was filmed in a real home in Illinois, and it featured the cozy, cheerful decor style of the ’90s. Production Designer, John Muto, did an excellent job in setting up all the rooms, especially the master bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining room. With the ’90s style of nostalgic decor coming back in style, the decor ideas inspired by Home Alone are worth incorporating in your own home to recreate those childhood memories of fun and mischief, along with comfort and security.
Red and green palette
As you watch the movie, you’ll notice that there’s an unmistakable color palette of red and green throughout the home, and even in the clothes Kevin wears! This is probably because Home Alone is a Christmas movie, but the shades used are deeper, making them suitable year-round!
Red and green appear on the walls, the carpets, the prints, the furnishings and even florals. This is an easy color scheme to put together, and if you want to avoid a look that’s too Christmassy, choose deeper tones like blood-red or emerald green.
Bright wall paint
You know the production designer is fully invested in the color theme when you notice the bright wall paint! Entire walls are drenched in deep red and a jewel green tone, giving the home a cheerful and festive vibe without being too overpowering.
Red is a tricky color, especially on large surfaces like walls, so it’s important to choose the right shade. Don’t be afraid of painting the entire wall – it’ll look stunning when you bring out the color in artwork or other smaller accessories like prints and florals.
Patterned wallpaper
The McCallisters don’t shy away from colors or prints, as is evident from the abundant use of patterned wallpaper throughout the home! This is a very ’90s trend, and it’s coming back, especially through shows like Bridgerton.
In Home Alone, the patterns on the wallpaper vary from repeating florals in the master bedroom to a damask in the foyer to pretty swans in the bathroom. Yes, even the bathroom has wallpaper, and it looks super cute above all the tiling!
Colorful bedding
Many people think that beds need white, beige or other neutral colors to appear cozy, but the McCallister’s house proves that’s not true! The bed in the master bedroom has a completely ruby red bedding set, and it looks lovely against the patterned wallpaper with the red flowers.
In the attic, where Kevin is exiled, there’s a kid’s bed that has a cute, colorful geometrical print on it. Even in the second part, the bedding in Kevin’s hotel room is a bright green, and none of these bright colors takes away from the coziness of the bed!
Large dining spaces
One thing a large house with a loving family absolutely needs is a large dining space that can accommodate everyone – and their friends! The McCallisters have a huge kitchen with lots of bar stools by the counter (remember the mess created when Kevin tackled Buzz?)
Besides the kitchen counter, they also have a majestic wooden dining table with matching chairs. The chairs’ upholstery matches the red and green color scheme, and a large vase of flowers completes the look.
Soft lighting
One of the most crucial things you need to create a warm, inviting atmosphere is the right lighting. Those bright overhead lights need to go – and they need to be replaced with soft lighting, which is another ’90s trend that’s coming back!
The McCallisters use wall sconces, hanging chandeliers, table lamps and even candlelight to create that warm, cozy, happy vibe that we’re trying to create. Another easy way to get this look is by using string lights, which you can arrange over furniture or hang near windows.
Retro decor
Yes, we’re calling the ’90s retro, and we don’t regret it one bit! If you truly want to display your affection for the Home Alone franchise, get one of those box-shaped TVs that Kevin watches violent shows on, which he’s not allowed to watch otherwise.
You can also get sports team posters from the ’90s, or trunks and old-fashioned Christmas cards, which you can frame. Some great spots to get such items are second-hand markets or vintage shops.
Quirky items
When Kevin was setting up traps for Harry and Marv, I wondered how he managed to find all the things he used, from marbles to mannequins! The Home Alone decor style is all about showing your personality and creating a real, lived-in space for you and your family. Buzz certainly agrees, which is why he has an entire shelf set-up to display his favorite possessions!
It’s a family that makes a home, but these decor tips can also help, especially if you want to create a home with the same aesthetic as Kevin’s! Not only is this a realistic decor style, but it’s also easy to maintain and gives you a sense of comfort, security and of course, happiness!
