Today, we celebrate the amazing Nancy Meyers and her iconic kitchens with these decor ideas inspired by Something’s Gotta Give!
“Single older women as a demographic are about as fucked a group as can ever exist.”
As I enter my mid-40s, I realize that I’d rather stay home more than anywhere else. As a result, my shopping habits have changed – fewer clothes and accessories, more home decor and organizers!
This probably explains why I’m more drawn to movie makers like Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron – the homes in their movies are gorgeous!! You’ve already seen me talk about It’s Complicated, and today, we’re looking at Something’s Gotta Give, another Nancy Meyers production!
The movie came out in 2003, and follows the life of Erica Barry, a successful playwright who’s also single and middle-aged. She lives in a stunning home in the Hamptons, and we’ll look at some ways you can replicate the look in your own space!
Decor Ideas Inspired by Something’s Gotta Give
The Hamptons is a popular choice for rich people, but Erica’s home is not garishly opulent; it’s chic and has an effortless, laidback vibe to it. Being on the seaside, the decor has many coastal elements that celebrate the location. Meyers, production designer Jon Hutman and set decorator Beth Rubino did an excellent job in turning a Shingle-style villa into the ultimate dreamhouse of a successful, independent and classy woman!
Shades of blue
Erica’s home is by the sea, so Meyers has included lots of blue in the decor, in multiple shades. The nautical blue and white striped rug has become iconic, and is now one of Meyers’ instantly identifiable decor elements. You can see more blue and white stripes on the cushions and towels by the pool.
The sofas and armchairs are a pale blue shade. The cushions bring out this color by using a slightly darker shade of blue along with white. This is a very easy look to create in your own home, especially if you bring in some blue and white striped furnishings.
Soft neutrals
Erica is an elegant woman with a casual chic style, and this is visible in the colors she uses in her home too. The blue and white rest beautifully against warm neutrals like cream and beige. The flooring is wooden, and this dark base is offset by lighter-toned walls, doors and cabinets.
You can also go with a slightly cooler tone like greige – it’s another color that works well with shades of blue. Erica’s neutral color palette can also be seen in smaller items, like her set of neutral dishware. A color palette like this is classic and quite easy to replicate.
Natural textures
A classy woman like Erica would not have plastic in her home, no way! She would have lots of natural materials, bringing in multiple textures that truly celebrate living by the sea. Meyers had done exactly that, with a soapstone kitchen counter, glass cabinets, and solid wood furniture.
Even the smaller items have lots of texture – ceramic dishes, woven baskets, sisal rugs, linen curtains, wicker chairs, and metal trays. Using a mix of these in their natural colors adds that lovely, comforting feel to the home, just like Mother Nature gives us!
Steel appliances
Appliance manufacturers are going all out these days, making products in multiple colors so that homeowners can pick a toaster or blender that perfectly suits their kitchen’s color palette. But not our girl, Erica! She keeps it timeless by choosing steel appliances that match well with the neutral environment.
You’ll see that she’s chosen steel for large appliances like the cooking range, chimney, and refrigerator. But she’s also extended the steel theme to her smaller items like toasters, kettles, blenders and even her stand mixer!
Large doors and windows
One of the very Hamptons-esque features of Erica’s home is the abundance of natural light, made possible by large French windows and doors. Not only do these let in lots of light, they also offer up lovely views of the pool and greenery outside.
The best part is the placement of these windows. Erica’s writing space is right in front of a large bay window that gives her the perfect view of the sea! She also has large windows in her kitchen, which makes boring tasks like washing dishes a pleasant experience.
Timeless furniture
If you want to recreate the Meyers look in your home, do what she’s done with the furniture – choose classic, timeless pieces with basic shapes and clean lines. All the furniture seems to be well-made, presumably of solid wood or natural materials like wicker or rattan.
Another aspect of the furniture in Erica’s home is how cozy and comfortable they seem. The sofas and armchairs are stuffed and have slipcovers, while even the upholstered ottoman looks inviting enough to sit on! Erica also uses lots of open shelves or cabinets with glass doors, which means you have a great opportunity to display your stuff!
Coastal art
In Something’s Gotta Give, Meyers tries to bring the outdoors in with the help of art. That’s why you’ll notice that almost all the artwork in Erica’s home reminds you of the sea or water – women in swimsuits, beach scenes, lighthouses and the like.
Most of the paintings in the movie are by artist R. Kenton Nelson, and the colors he uses match the ones in Erica’s home. It’s a great idea to pick a large piece of art like this, and then use the colors in the picture to decorate the space around it.
Beachy decor
If you can bring the outdoors in through art, why not do it with little pieces of..well, the outdoors!! Erica’s home reminds us again of where she lives with little vignettes scattered around the home, on trays, side tables and console tables.
These include smooth pebbles, conch shells, and other shell-type items (sorry, I don’t know what they’re called). These sit side-by-side with candles, books and Erica’s personal effects, like her Tony award!
Solid bedding
Erica’s home is chic, but it is also very comfortable, cozy and inviting, especially her bedroom! This is in no small measure due to the high-quality bedding she’s used. All the bedding we see in the movie is mostly in solid neutral colors, with very small, almost invisible prints.
Another sure-shot way to make your bed a comfy paradise is to get your headboard upholstered. When you can sit back and ready our favorite book, it helps to have your head rest on something soft and fluffy!
Fresh flowers
Erica sure lives by the sea, and has beach-themed decor, but that doesn’t mean she can’t have fresh flowers too! In fact, she has quite a few bunches of them all around the house, and they add a wonderful, natural pop of color the otherwise neutral space. Hydrangeas seem to be a favorite, but anything colorful will work!
What I love about these decor ideas inspired by Something’s Gotta Give is that while Erica’s home looks high-end and expensive, it’s actually quite budget-friendly to recreate! Furnishings in soft neutrals, wicker baskets, off white dishware, cream wall paint, fresh flowers – none of these are expensive! So go ahead and create the home of your dreams – one that is timeless and perfect for you!
