Create a home that’s full of laughter, music, & most importantly, love! These decor ideas inspired by This is Us help us achieve this easily!
“You make me feel like I’m home.”
A young family with three kids. Sounds like a very ordinary thing, but then you meet the Pearsons. Then you realize that they’re ordinary and special all at the same time, and that’s what makes them so well-loved by millions!
The Pearson family is at the center of the TV show, This is Us. It’s a story that follows the members of the family over several years, crossing generations. Jack and Rebecca Pearson lead the family, along with their three kids and everyone else who comes in later.
The Pearsons aren’t billionaires – they’re regular, hardworking people like you and me. So it’s only natural that their home looks like any home that has three kids of the same age – filled with toys, chaos and lots of laughter!
Decor Ideas Inspired by This is Us
The Pearsons’ home goes through many changes as the seasons progress, much like any real home would. Production Designer Gary Frutkoff and set Decorator Beth Wooke create a comfortable, homely feel in the Pearson family home, but their kids’ homes are quite different. For instance, Randall’s home is much more contemporary, with elegant interiors and stylish decor. Let’s dig into some of the decor tips we can steal from these houses!
Comfy layouts
One of the reasons this show is so well-loved is because it’s like a warm hug – it just makes you feel all nice and fuzzy inside! This is in part due to the comfy layouts in all the rooms. This means that whether the kids are young or grown-up, they are still able to settle down in that familiar, comfortable space. This comfiness is easily achieved through lots of cushions in different sizes, fluffy rugs, and throws, along with abundant seating options – like a rocking chair!
Family photos
A family home can hardly be called one without lots of photos around the place, especially when the kids have grown up in that home! You’ll see photo frames on tables, both as singles and in a group. Family photos also make their way to a gallery wall, a lot like the one we saw in Modern Family. It’s the perfect way to fill a vast, empty space!
Bamboo and rattan items
One of the easiest ways to give your home that warm, welcoming feel is to use natural materials like rattan, wicker and bamboo. The Pearsons seem to have a particular affinity for these, and you can find them anywhere! There are rattan chairs, bamboo shelves, tables and even wall hangers. These pieces aren’t expensive, which means you can get a nice, homely look on a budget!
Kitchen curtains
All the homes in This is Us have this in common – pretty curtains covering their kitchen windows! Some of them are cafe curtains – short curtains that cover the lower half of the window, leaving the upper half open. This way, you get the privacy you need, while also letting in natural light. Cafe curtains were quite popular many years back, and are now making a return to modern homes!
Printed bedding
The Pearsons’ home is not a place you’ll find neutral or all-white bedding – with 3 kids of the same age, it could be quite a challenge to maintain something like that! Instead, they opt for heavily patterned bedding in dark colors, which seems to be the sensible choice for a young family. Randall also uses patterned bedding, but his patterns are lighter, and the colors are more muted.
Checked patterns
Checks have always been a popular pattern for home decor enthusiasts, and they’re often used when a place needs to be made more inviting. This probably explains why many restaurants have chequered tablecloths! This is Us also has an abundance of checks everywhere – on curtains, upholstery, bedding and even rugs. They give the home a nice, lived-in feeling, and also add to the cosy factor!
Large rugs
The Pearsons love their rugs, and they like them big! The rugs they use cover a large area of the rooms they’re in, making them an integral part of the decor. The rugs are all in neutral colours, which go well with the light wooden furniture in all the rooms. It makes it easier for the family to gather on the floor when there’s a soft surface underneath!
Nature-themed art
In Randall’s home, you’ll notice lots of art, and most of the frames occupy a single wall all by themselves. Another common theme among his art is that they all appear to have some reference to nature – beaches and forests, for example. Trees appear multiple times, which is believed to be a reference to Randall searching for his roots since he’s the only adopted child of the Pearson family.
Musical elements
Rebecca’s dream was to become a singer, but with triplets, she had to put this dream on the back burner for many years. You’ll find many signs of this love for music throughout the house, over the years. From guitars to grand pianos, from record players to music posters, Rebecca shows her love for music in many ways!
Mix and match dishware
In a regular home like the Pearsons’, the family doesn’t always eat off the best china or completely matching sets. When you have young kids, things are bound to break, and over time, you end up with a collection that has pieces from different places. This is Us celebrates this mix-and-match aesthetic, and I think it’s quite a charming vibe! It also makes for an eclectic display when arranged in cabinets with glass doors.
Kitchen islands
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and what is the heart of the kitchen? The kitchen island, of course! This is where the family gathers around, and where other family members can chip in to help with making dinner. All the homes featured in the show have a kitchen island, and many scenes are filmed around it, emphasising its importance in a family home!
Small, intimate celebrations
The story of the Pearsons begins in the eighties, when birthday parties and other celebrations used to be rather low-key, and not the extravagant events they are today. True to this trend, the Pearsons also celebrated all their family’s special occasions among themselves, in little intimate gatherings. It’s a lovely way to create beautiful memories for everyone, especially kids – they don’t really need a lot to be happy!
Celebration of childhood
A lot of parents stress about keeping their homes pristine, hiding all their kids’ stuff and making it look like only adults live there. But not the Pearsons – they celebrate everything associated with their kids! The kids’ toys are everywhere around the house, which is a perfectly normal sight in any home with kids! Wherever you look, you find little things that show the kids live there – remnants of craft projects, magnets on the fridge, toys under the coffee table and more!
Happy messes
Finally, when you are raising kids, one thing you absolutely must do is to learn to accept the mess. Kids and messes go hand in hand, and you’ll go crazy trying to keep it under control all the time. Instead, remember that the messes will disappear when your kids move out eventually, so make the most of it while they’re still home! Get down and dirty and have some fun – you can always clean up later!
Watching This is Us, you’ll feel your worries slowly melting away as your muscles loosen up. All those to-dos swimming in your head seem less important, and all that matters is the here and the now. That’s exactly what the show’s trying to tell us – time flies, and we have to treasure the moments we have with our loved ones. So go and ug your family a little closer today!
