A woman moving to a new place to restart life isn’t new – we saw it in Under the Tuscan Sun. But when she moves to a woodsy area that has a cozy cabin, it turns into one of the biggest hits of modern TV!
The TV show in question is Virgin River, which is based on the novels of the same name by Robyn Carr. The first season premiered in 2019, and the latest season, the seventh, was released this year. With this new season, Virgin River is all set to become Netflix’s longest-running series!
The show is about Melinda, a midwife and nurse practitioner, who moves from Los Angeles to Virgin River, a quaint little town in Northern California. She has some trouble adjusting to rural life, but soon enough, she falls in love with the postcard-perfect town, with its gorgeous mountains, placid lakes and of course, her adorable log cabin!
Decor Ideas Inspired by Virgin River
The stunning visuals of Virgin River are a result of the work of location manager Robert “Fluffy” Millar and production designer Tony Devenyi. The series is shot in British Columbia, Canada, so now you know where those beautiful locales are! As for the cabin, let’s break down what makes it so cozy!!
Dark wood
Mel’s cabin has a lot of features that you’d expect from any log cabin, including lots of dark wood. Wood is in the flooring, on the walls, and in the furniture. It’s a dark grain wood, which adds to the moody, cozy feel inside the cabin. It gives the places a rustic feel, and if you can’t have logs on your walls, you can always use peel-and-stick wallpaper that has a similar pattern on it.
Colored spaces
Despite what many people think, the dark wood goes well with soft colors, and all the Virgin River homes prove this! The salmon pink on the bedroom walls, the light blue in Doc’s clinic, and the sage green in his kitchen – they’re not in small doses; rather, the walls are drenched in color! It adds an element of cheer, especially since the shades are not bright or striking.
Cozy fireplaces
A log cabin absolutely must have a fireplace; there must be a rule like that written down somewhere! It’s sure to get cold in the woods, making a fireplace not just aesthetic but functional as well. The interesting thing is that each home’s fireplace is made of different materials – wood, stone, or concrete. Arrange a few chairs and a little game table in front of it and you have a cozy corner to relax in the evenings!
Wicker furniture
A home that has cabin wibes is sure to have furniture made of natural materials like solid wood and wicker or rattan. Mel’s home and Doc’s home have wicker chairs in different sizes, and you’ll find them relaxing on them almost every day – even in cold weather! They’re made cozier by adding throws and cushions, which brings us to the next point!
Throws everywhere
There’s something about throws that immediately makes a place warm and inviting. Mel has throws draped over her sofa and her bed, and Hope and Connie’s homes also use throws abundantly over their sofas and chairs. The throws are of different colors and textures, like knitted, crocheted, woven and quilted. The cat throw on Lizzie’s chair is cute!
Fluffy cushions and pillows
If you want to increase the coziness factor of your home, add some fluffy cushions to your sofas, chairs and beds, and you’ll feel relaxed simply by looking at your space! Don’t worry too much about matching them perfectly – Mel uses a mix of patterns and colors, and the effect is quite nice and eclectic. Let the throw contrast with the cushions for a fun and energetic vibe.
Natural light
When you have so much natural beauty around you, it’s only natural that you’d want a front row seat to the views, which explains why all the homes in Virgin River have large windows that let in loads of natural light. They’re all dressed with pretty curtains too – after all, you do need your privacy! Light sheers help diffuse strong sunlight and create a nice glow inside the home.
Beautiful lamps
Natural light is all well and good when the sun’s up, but once night falls, you need other sources of light. In Virgin River, it looks like the people get their lamps from many different places – how else can you explain such an eclectic and charming collection! The best part is that they’re not perfectly matched or symmetrical – Hope had two different lamps on either side of her bed. This is quite different from the symmetry we saw in The Queen’s Gambit or in Wes Anderson‘s movies.
String lights
Lamps and chandeliers are fine, but you know what would really turn a cozy cabin into a girl’s dream space? String lights! Everyone uses string lights in Virgin River, both indoors and outdoors, and even in food trucks! They’re an easy and budget-friendly way to give your room some cabin vibes, and you can drape them pretty much anywhere you like.
Interesting art
Even a cabin in the woods needs art, and nature-inspired themes seem to be appropriate! That’s why we see nature landscapes, florals and similar paintings in various places in the show. However, Doc’s clinic’s art is a sure conversation starter, considering it has landscapes sitting side-by-side with brain diagrams!
There’s something incredibly cozy about living in a small home, not to mention how much easier it is to maintain compared to a large house! Mel’s cabin has everything that she needs, including a handsome man who dotes on her! It’s warm, cozy and comfortable, and the minute you step out, you are greeted by some of the most amazing views of nature!
